The Common Ground
Shared Freedom is the order of those who hold the space in which all the other orders can stand. We are the civic and secular path within the Assembly — the community of conscience for people whose deepest commitments are to human dignity, honest reason, and the shared life of a free society, expressed without the language of any single revelation.
This does not mean we are empty of conviction. The civic tradition has its own sacred things: the dignity that no power may strip from any person, the conscience that no authority may command, the honest argument, the peaceful transfer of disagreement into decision, the courage to defend another’s freedom even when you would not use it yourself. These are not thin gruel beside religion — they are the load-bearing walls of every free civilization, and they have their martyrs too.
What Makes This Path Distinct
Shared Freedom is the Assembly’s host and guardian. Because we claim no revelation, we can be trusted to hold the ring fairly for those who do. Our members staff the civic canon’s institutions, moderate the Assembly’s deliberations, and keep the four principles — dignity, conscience, participation, restraint — as living law rather than decorative words. Every order needs a neighbor committed to the shared rules; we are that neighbor.
We are also the order of the questioning believer and the reverent skeptic alike — the Christian who loves the church but thinks critically, the former believer who kept the ethics and released the metaphysics, the lifelong secularist who finds the Assembly’s civic vision compelling. Doubt is not a defect here; it is a discipline.
Who This Order Is For
Teachers, journalists, organizers, public servants, philosophers, and plain citizens who believe freedom is a practice, not a possession. Anyone who has stood up for someone else’s rights, who reads the news with moral attention, who volunteers at the unglamorous meetings where democracy actually happens — you are already doing the work of this order. Come do it in company.
We hold no creed but this: every person is an end, never a means — and freedom shared is freedom secured.
