Community Life

The community of Shared Freedom feels like the best version of a town hall crossed with a good dinner party. Our gatherings mix the serious and the convivial: rigorous discussion followed by shared food, civic workdays followed by music, deliberation leavened with laughter.

We are deliberate about political and philosophical diversity. The order actively recruits across the spectrum — progressives and conservatives, libertarians and social democrats — because a community of the already-convinced teaches nothing. The ground rules are firm: argue positions, never attack persons; no one speaks for a whole group; what is said in the circle stays in the circle.

Service is the community’s handshake with the wider world: voter registration drives, court watching, neighborhood cleanups, accompaniment for vulnerable neighbors dealing with bureaucracy. We also keep the Assembly’s inter-order peace — members trained in facilitation and conflict mediation serve as the neutral conveners when the orders need to work through disagreement.

Come argue with us. Stay for supper. Leave with your convictions tested and your friendships intact.
