Library

The Living Promise library is built for a people of the book — which means it is large, argumentative, and never finished.

The Living Promise volume of Freedom and Reality renders the Assembly’s vision in the language of covenant: the giver and receiver as the two parties of the brit, prevailing as Israel’s refusal to disappear, freedom as the liberty of a people bound by promise rather than by power. In the Assembly shop.

Around it: the Tanakh with classical commentaries (Rashi above all), Pirkei Avot, Maimonides, Buber, Heschel, and the modern library of Jewish thought — theology after the Holocaust, Zionism and its critics, feminism and tradition, science and Torah. The children’s shelf tells the stories simply: Exodus, Esther, the Maccabees — because a people that forgets its stories forgets itself.
